On Wednesday, August 22 the Mashpee School Committee adopted a 2018-2019 school year calendar that acknowledges Indigenous People day in place of Columbus Day.

The five-member board voted unanimously in favor of adopting next year’s calendar, which designates the new holiday on Monday, October 8.

School Committee Member Nicole Bartlett asked that Committee to make the change, citing atrocities against native people attributed to the explorer and those who followed him to the Americas and the large Native population that the Mashpee School serve.
