WLRP Provides Support to Mashpee Public Schools

The Wôpanâak Language Reclamation Project is pleased to provide staff, resources, and funding to support students within the Mashpee Public School (MPS) District who are seeking Wôpanâak language instruction and cultural enrichment. Generously supported by a grant from the federal U.S. Department of Education, WLRP provides the following services to students in the MPS Quashnet, Coombs, and Middle/High Schools:

  • Teachers and curriculum to support four levels —Pâsuq (Level 1), Nees (Level 2), Nuhsh (Level 3), and Yâw (Level 4) — of credit-bearing Wôpanâak language classes. # of Students served = 26.  Annual budget = $66,830

  • Weekly Tuesday-Thursday after-school language and culture enrichment programs.  # of Students served = 75.  Annual budget = $45,250

  • Wôpanâak language books (writing, illustration & printing) for distribution to tribal familes. # of families served = 120.  Annual budget = $48,000

  • Distribution of Native-authored books and films to support culture-based instruction and professional development.  Annual budget = $11,000

Combined with new private foundation and donor gifts WLRP's total annual investment in MPS World Languages education totals nearly $200,000! Thank you to our funders and MPS partners who make these opportunities possible for our Tribal students. ​​​​​​​
