Tribe Awarded Native Teacher Recruitment Grant

The tribe has recently been awarded a Native Teacher Recruitment grant through the U.S Department of Education/Office of Indian Education. The award is for 5 years at $470,000 - $495,000 per year, for the purpose of recruiting Native teachers and supporting the retention of Native teachers within the schools that partner with the Mashpee Wampanoag Education Department.

The Mashpee school district currently has two new Mashpee Wampanoag teachers this year, one of whom was recruited by the Education Department under a previous STEP grant. Another Native teacher, Clayton Oakley-Robbins is a science teacher at the Mashpee Middle High School.

Many tribal members attended high school in Falmouth where Earl H. Mills, Sr. was a teacher, coach and athletic director. The younger generation fondly remembers Mrs. Marlene Perry and Gail Hendricks Hill, in the classroom at the Quashnet School. It matters, to see someone who looks like, and is one of us, in the classroom, in administrative positions, and in positions that ensure the offices and buildings continue to operate.
